Facts about the NRK telethon

Facts about the NRK telethon

The NRK telethon is the largest information campaign and fundraising event in Norway.

What is the TV-aksjonen NRK?
The NRK telethon is the world’s largest fundraising campaign, measured by the number of volunteers and the amount of money collected per capita. During the telethon in October, 100,000 door-to-door fundraisers will knock on 2.5 million doors.

When is the 2024 telethon taking place?
The 2024 telethon takes place on 20 October. NRK will run a live broadcast and the Radio P3 campaign will take place during the preceding days.

Who organises the telethon?
The telethon is organised by a secretariat that works closely with the organization. The secretariat coordinates 7,000 volunteers across the country and organises the fundraising campaign through 500 municipal and neighbourhood committees.

Who decides which project the telethon is awarded to?
A separate fundraising council appointed by the Board of Directors of NRK receives and considers applications from the organisations seeking to be awarded the telethon campaign. The broadcasting director makes the final decision as to who will be awarded the telethon campaign. The fundraising council is also responsible for verifying how the money is spent.

How long has the telethon been held for?
The telethon has been arranged every year since 1974 and has provided vital support for millions of people.

Why are the door-to-door fundraisers (collection carriers) the most important people in the telethon?
The reason why we are able to collect so much year after year is the door-to-door fundraisers. When the door-to-door fundraisers ring the doorbell, people are reminded that the telethon is on, what the funds will be used for and that they have the opportunity to make a contribution. During the 2023 telethon, door-to-door fundraisers raised an incredible NOK 94 million during the two-hour walk.
